Why Asphalt Beats Concrete for Your Driveway

Down here in Pompano Beach, concrete cracks and heaves from the heat and wet ground. Asphalt is flexible—it moves with the soil and doesn't shatter. Plus, it's cheaper to install and repair. A proper asphalt driveway with a good base will outlast concrete in our climate.

We use a mix with a higher binder content to resist the sun's UV rays. That means less oxidation and raveling. The dark color also melts ice faster in winter—though that's hardly a concern here—but it does heat up less than concrete in summer because it absorbs heat and cools quicker at night.

The Base: What Makes or Breaks Your Driveway

Base failure is the number one reason driveways fail in Pompano Beach. Our sandy soil and heavy rains wash out the support layer if it's not done right. We dig down 8-12 inches, lay down geotextile fabric to separate the soil, then bring in graded base rock and compact it in lifts with a vibratory roller. No skipping steps.

I've seen too many driveways alligator-crack after one wet season because someone skimped on the base. We don't do that. We also slope the base away from your house to prevent water pooling. Hurricane season flooding will find any low spot, so we make sure water runs off into the swale or drainage system.

Custom Driveways: Shapes, Borders, and Patterns

Your driveway doesn't have to be a plain rectangle. We can do curved edges, circular turnarounds, and even stamp the asphalt to look like brick or cobblestone. We use a coal-tar emulsion sealcoat with a sand finish for traction, and we can route fake joints to give it a paver look.

For larger properties in Pompano Isles or Hillsboro Shores, we often integrate paver borders or concrete banding to match the landscaping. The asphalt itself is laid with a paver machine for a smooth finish, and we hand-roll the edges for a clean line. Milled edges against existing concrete keep a tight seal.

Our Process: From Demo to Sealcoat

First, we demo the old driveway—haul away the broken concrete or beat-up asphalt. We grade the subgrade, add base rock, compact it, then spray a tack coat to bond the new asphalt. The hot mix comes from the plant at 300°F, we lay it down, and roll it with a steel drum and a pneumatic roller for density.

After it cools, we let it cure for a few days before applying the first sealcoat. We use a high-quality coal-tar emulsion, not the cheap acrylic stuff. Two coats, brushed into the surface to fill small cracks. We also route any major cracks and fill them with rubberized crack filler before sealing. The result is a driveway that looks good and lasts.
